Teachers can talk careers and opportunities, but for many students, it doesn’t truly click until they see it for themselves.
That is what happened for 13 Goliad High School sophomores and juniors who had the opportunity to tour Holt Caterpillar in Victoria last week.
“The purpose of this trip was to learn what the internship opportunities are for students,” said Nathan Hammack, GHS Agriculture Science teacher. “It's one thing to talk about this in class and another to put boots on the ground in the shop and see what equipment the technicians are working on, how they work on it and gauge interest for the next group of interns.”
This is the second year that GHS students have been able to make this trip.
“This partnership helps students by giving them a inside look at how the heavy equipment industry works,’ Hammack said. “They gain on the job training by shadowing heavy equipment technicians as they work on equipment and gain a mechanical skill set that is second to none.
“Upon completion of the internship, provided their evaluations have shown growth and good work ethic, there is the possibility of students becoming full fledged Hot Caterpillar employees.”
